K1 Lesson 08: My Family Picture Talk

Material Checklist β€” Full Lesson

Learning Objectives

Warm-up: Meeting Up & Warming Up (10 mins)

Purpose: Create a warm, non-invasive entry to family talk, then preview vocabulary before circle share builds speaking confidence.

Step 1 Β· Meeting Up (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Psychological safety, predictable arrival, gentle preview of family theme.

Teacher Β· Arrival & circle welcome

"Good morning, friends! Hello! Welcome back. Sit on your spot β€” same safe circle."
"Look at me." (hold Look card) "Listen." (hold Listen card) "Today we talk about family β€” people who love us."
"Mom, dad, brother, sister, baby. All families are different β€” all families are special."

Teacher Β· Door greeting script

"Hello, [name]! I am so happy you came today."
"You may wave or say Hello β€” both are perfect. Find your dot β€” same circle as always."
"[Name] is here β€” let's count friends. One, two, three… we are a family circle today!"

Teacher Β· Family card peek

"Peek β€” mom!" (flash mom card) "Peek β€” dad!" (flash dad card)
"We use kind words today. We listen when friends share. No questions about home β€” only happy labels."
"[Puppet name] has a family too β€” mom and dad! Say hello, [puppet name]!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child asks invasive questions ("Where is your dad?"), redirect: "We only say This is my ___. Kind labels today."

If a child says "I have no brother," validate: "Some families have sisters only β€” or pets! Pick any card word that fits you."

If a child becomes emotional about family, offer puppet or pass: "You can whisper to [puppet name] or listen today β€” both are brave."

Management Cue: Eyes on me in 3, 2, 1 β€” establish circle calm before any family vocabulary β€” sensitive topic needs extra safety.
Management Cue: Post sentence frame card visible all lesson: "This is my ___." β€” reduces pressure to invent new language.
Management Cue: Never require home photos β€” generic laminated cards and puppet talk are full participation for every child.
  1. Door greeting: Hello to each child + invite to circle spot.
  2. Look Β· Listen Β· Sit β€” 3-second settle wait.
  3. Flash mom and dad cards β€” model "This is my mom" with sample poster (β‰ˆ1 min).
  4. Puppet intro: puppet says "This is my dad!" β€” children wave to puppet (β‰ˆ30 sec).
  5. State listening rule: "When a friend shares, we look and listen β€” quiet hands."

Step 2 Β· Warming Up (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Energy + family word chorus with hug gestures before individual circle share.

Teacher Β· Greeting + command review

"Hello, friends! How are you? I'm happy! Thumbs up!"
"Look! Listen! Sit! Magic words β€” you remember!"

Teacher Β· Family word chorus

"Mom!" (arms open hug) "Dad!" (hug gesture) "Brother!" (high-five gesture)
"Sister!" (hold hands gesture) "Baby!" (rocking arms) "Family hug β€” arms around yourself β€” love!"
"Your turn β€” copy my gesture. Mom β€” hug! Dad β€” hug! Baby β€” rock rock!"

Teacher Β· Quick label drill

"Who is this?" (hold mom card) "Mom!"
"Who is this?" (hold sister card) "Sister! This is my sister!"
"One more β€” baby! This is my baby! Rock rock!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child uses L1 family word only, accept and echo in English: "μ—„λ§ˆ β€” yes β€” mom! This is my mom!"

If a child laughs at another's share word, firm but kind: "Kind circle. We listen β€” no silly voices during share."

If hug gesture becomes rough hugging neighbors, reset: "Hug yourself β€” gentle family hug β€” arms around you."

Management Cue: Model hug gesture on self only during warm-up β€” prevents grabbing classmates before share rules are set.
Management Cue: Use diverse family cards β€” single-parent, grandparent, two-dad/two-mom images if available β€” normalize all families quietly.
Management Cue: After family chorus, Listen card + 3-second wait β€” transition from loud chorus to quiet share circle.
  1. Hello + Look Β· Listen Β· Sit β€” 2 rounds (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Family word chorus with gesture Γ— full set of five (β‰ˆ2 min).
  3. Quick label drill: teacher holds card, class says word + sentence frame once (β‰ˆ1 min).
  4. Listening rule reminder: "Eyes on speaker β€” quiet hands" (β‰ˆ30 sec).
  5. Transition: "Now real pictures β€” family puppet circle share!"

Teacher Β· Transition to Main Activity

"Warm-up finished! You know mom, dad, brother, sister, baby."
"Look at me. Listen. Sit. Quiet hands β€” family puppet circle is next!"
"[Puppet name] is ready. When friends share, we listen with kind eyes. Are you ready?"

Main Activity: Family Puppet Circle Share & /m/ /d/ Phonics (15 mins)

Teacher Note: Opening Up builds speaking through low-pressure family puppet circle share; Cheering Up locks /m/ mom and /d/ dad through picture cards and hug TPR. Never ask invasive family questions.

Step 3 Β· Opening Up (β‰ˆ8 min)

Purpose: MAIN theme activity β€” family puppet circle share: each child holds a card or photo and says "This is my ___."

Teacher Β· Circle share setup

"Family puppet circle! I give you one picture card. Look β€” find mom or dad or sister β€” whoever you want."
"When it is your turn, hold up your card. Say: This is my mom! Or point and say one word β€” mom! Both are perfect."
"Friends listen β€” quiet hands β€” kind eyes on the speaker."

Teacher Β· Model + puppet round

"Watch me. This is my mom!" (hold sample poster) "Hug gesture β€” love!"
"[Puppet name]'s turn. This is my dad!" (puppet voice) "Your turn, Sora!"
"If you want help, [puppet name] whispers with you β€” brave share!"

Teacher Β· Puppet circle listening round

"Puppet circle rule β€” when [friend's name] talks, we look and listen. No calling out β€” quiet hands."
"[Puppet name] listens too β€” see? Eyes on the speaker. Ears open."
"After each share we echo together β€” This is my mom! β€” one time only. Kind voices β€” family love!"

Teacher Β· Share rounds

"Round one β€” mom or dad only. Round two β€” brother, sister, or baby. Round three β€” pick your favorite family word again!"
"Class echoes: This is my mom! Nice share, Minho!"
"No questions β€” only clap and smile. Family circle finished β€” gentle clap!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child freezes, offer puppet co-voice: "Puppet says it with you β€” This is my… dad!" Accept one word or gesture.

If a child shares wrong label ("This is my dog"), smile: "Dogs are family too! Today use mom, dad, brother, sister, or baby β€” pick one."

If a child cries during share, pause circle: "Feelings are OK. You can listen today. [Puppet name] sits with you."

If share runs long, fast round: point to card + one word only β€” no full sentence required.

Management Cue: Pass cards in order around circle β€” predictable turn order reduces anxiety; skip is always allowed with a nod.
Management Cue: Echo phrase after each share β€” whole class repeats "This is my mom!" β€” builds community without putting shy child on spot twice.
Management Cue: Co-teacher or puppet models every round before first child share β€” K1 needs multiple models for sentence frames.
  1. Distribute laminated family scene cards β€” one per child (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Teacher + puppet model full share (β‰ˆ1 min).
  3. Round 1: each child shares mom or dad β€” word or sentence (β‰ˆ3 min).
  4. Round 2: swap card or pick new member β€” brother/sister/baby (β‰ˆ2 min).
  5. Class echo + gentle clap after each share; collect cards in basket (β‰ˆ1 min).

Step 4 Β· Cheering Up (β‰ˆ7 min)

Purpose: Phonics /m/ mom and /d/ dad β€” picture cards + hug TPR + peer cheer.

Teacher Β· Introduce /m/ mom

"Mom starts with M! M says m-m-mom. Lips together β€” mmm-mmm-mmm. Mom β€” mmm!"
"This is mom." (show mom card) "Family hug β€” arms open β€” mmm β€” mom!"
"Stand up! Hug yourself β€” mmm β€” mom! Sit down β€” quiet mmm."

Teacher Β· Introduce /d/ dad + partner cheer

"Dad starts with D! D says d-d-dad. Tongue tap β€” duh-duh-duh. Dad β€” duh!"
"This is dad." (show dad card) "Strong hug β€” duh β€” dad! Tap chest β€” d-d-dad!"
"Partner cheer: you are mom β€” mmm hug! Friend is dad β€” duh tap! Switch!"

Teacher Β· Praise frames

"Wow! I heard mmm β€” mom sound!"
"Super dad sound β€” duh-duh!"
"Your hug is perfect β€” mmm β€” family love!"
"High five for listening β€” you know mom and dad sounds!"

Teacher Β· Hug TPR check

"Mom card β€” hug β€” mmm! Dad card β€” tap chest β€” duh!"
"Stand up β€” mom β€” mmm! Sit β€” dad β€” duh! In your spot."
"Last check β€” hold both cards β€” mom or dad? Listen and hug or tap!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child confuses mmm and duh, show cards side by side: "Mom β€” mmm β€” hug. Dad β€” duh β€” tap."

If hug TPR becomes grabbing a partner, reset: "Hug yourself β€” mmm β€” own body hug only."

If a child won't do partner cheer, teacher pairs: "You are my mom β€” mmm! I am dad β€” duh!"

If /m/ has no voice, hand on throat: "Feel the buzz β€” mmm β€” mom!"

Management Cue: Before standing TPR, say "Stand up in 3, 2, 1" and "Sit down in 3, 2, 1" every time β€” predictable transitions.
Management Cue: Shoulder partners for cheer β€” "Turn to your neighbor" reduces crossing the circle.
Management Cue: Accept mom/dad word without clear /m/ or /d/ β€” praise hug gesture loudly at K1.
  1. Show mom card β€” model /m/ Γ— 3, hug TPR Γ— 3.
  2. Show dad card β€” model /d/ Γ— 3, chest tap TPR Γ— 3.
  3. Alternating drill: teacher holds mom or dad card β€” class responds with sound + gesture.
  4. Partner cheer: 30 seconds each side β€” mom mmm / dad duh exchange.
  5. Whole-group check: mom card β†’ mmm + hug; dad card β†’ duh + tap.

Wrap-up: Calming Down (5 mins)

Purpose: Close family talk warmly, affirm shares, dismiss with Goodbye Song and family hug ritual.

Step 5 Β· Calming Down (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Breathing, compliment, goodbye song, dismissal.

Teacher Β· Calm breathing

"Family time is finished. Sit on your spot. Hands in lap β€” quiet circle."
"Breathe in… 1, 2, 3. Breathe out… mmm, 1, 2, 3. Soft mom breath out."
"Again. In… 1, 2, 3. Out… duh… quiet dad breath. Family hug β€” arms around you β€” still."

Teacher Β· Compliment circle

"Today you shared your family in our puppet circle! You said This is my mom and dad. You made mmm and duh sounds."
"I am proud of [name] for a brave puppet share. I am proud of [name] for kind listening eyes."
"I am proud of [name] for a gentle family hug. Everyone gets a sticker β€” quiet feet."

Teacher Β· Goodbye routine

"Stand up slowly. Stretch β€” big arms β€” family hug around yourself."
"Goodbye Song time. Wave your hands."
"Goodbye, goodbye, see you again. Goodbye, goodbye, see you again."
"Goodbye [name], goodbye [name], goodbye everyone β€” see you again!"
"Line up at the door. High five β€” bye bye! Tell your family β€” This is my mom!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child is still emotional after family share, quiet compliment at door: "You listened bravely today β€” sticker for kind heart."

If family hug circle gets too tight, open to self-hug only: "Hug yourself β€” love β€” gentle arms."

If line-up rush, pause song: "Walking feet β€” same order β€” family waits together."

Management Cue: Compliment 2–3 children by name β€” include one listener praise, not only speakers.
Management Cue: Dismiss in table order β€” predictable exit after emotional content helps regulation.
Management Cue: End with self-hug + wave β€” no forced group hug at K1 if any child showed distress during share.
  1. Two breath cycles with /m/ and /d/ exhale cues (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Compliments + stickers β€” name 2–3 share or listen moments (β‰ˆ1 min).
  3. Goodbye Song with individual name verse (β‰ˆ2 min).
  4. Line up β€” high-five exit ritual (β‰ˆ1 min).
